Laptop update
So I took the laptop to the Apple store in Boston. They diagnosed it as a totally failed hard drive (the machine, having booted from a firewire drive, was unable to see the internal drive). They said that they could replace the drive with one of the same size (20G) for $250 and it would take a day or two. Or I could go to a third-party Apple retailer and get a larger drive for about the same price (but with the same sort of delay). I didn’t feel like I could afford the delay (and I had been feeling the need for a new laptop anyway), so I bought a new iBook. I had been planning on waiting until I had more available money to spend on it. As it is, I got the cheapest model (1.2ghz) with base RAM (256MB). I'll have to go RAM hunting on Pricewatch soon here.
